The Royal Enfield Himalayan - on or off road. The only motorcycle you will ever need.

Royal Enfield Australia and New Zealand announced the pricing of its new Himalayan Adventure Bike at the 2016 Melbourne Moto Expo.

The new motorcycle was presented to an eager scrum of Australian motorcycle journalists by Royal Enfield’s head of international business Arun Gopa. “Our single biggest insight in all these years of riding, has been that the best motorcycle for mountains like the Himalayas is not the one that tries to dominate its landscape, but the one that is able to go with its flow”.

All of Himalayan’s sums and parts work in perfect harmony to utilize the energy of the terrain it traverses. A grounded stance, terrain tested suspension, dual purpose tyres combined with agile handling means the Himalayan can handle almost any off road environments.

*The Royal Enfield Himalayan will be available in ‘Snow' and 'Granite’, late January 2017 with a two year warranty and two years roadside assist in Australia for $6990 rideaway and in New Zealand with a two year warranty for $5990 incl. GST plus on road costs.

The Himalayan - in detail

Built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance, the Himalayan is stable and agile in equal parts. A strong mono shock rear suspension with linkage allows for longer travel and delivers a smoother ride experience regardless of terrain. The Himalayan’s 220 mm ground clearance ensures it gobbles up obstacles comfortably be it in the Himalayas, rocky-river beds or at streamcrossings. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts. The motorcycle enables both seasoned riders, as well as riding enthusiasts to explore more with just one motorcycle.

The Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine. The all new engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. This makes for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easy to climb hills, or to maneuver through traffic. Modern design and materials of the engine translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance, and the engine can go 10,000 kilometres between oil changes.

Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15 litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 kilometres. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycle’s design. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances. Most importantly, an ergonomic sync between footpegs, handlebar & seat height provide a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 800mm seat height with lower mass-balance ensures ease of planting feet on ground for complete control. Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tyres that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300mm front and 240mm rear disc brakes and Dual Channel ABS brakes help to reduce braking effort. Starting from the Bruntingthorpe airfield in UK to the race track in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, India; from off-road terrains to urban settings and then in real world riding conditions in the Himalayas; the Himalayan has been tested extensively by experts, for both off-road and on-road manners

Artists of the Margaret River Region

Western Australia's Margaret River Region is an area famously blessed – rich in wine, photogenic landscapes at every turn, and human creativity in spades. To celebrate the artists who have made the region so well-regarded, M&P Publishing is proud to announce the publication of Artists of the Margaret River Region this spring.

Over 70 artists in the Margaret River Region are featured in this beautifully designed book, which is published in association with Margaret River Open Studios (MRROS), with specially commissioned portraits and photographs of their work by leading local photographers (Elements of Margaret River and Crib Creative).

With profiles written by award-winning writers Carmen Jenner and Gabi Mills, Artists of the Margaret River Region is a legacy publication designed to capture the incredible artistry that finds expression in a wide variety of mediums, thanks to the artists who live and work in the region. Featuring a diverse collection of artists including Leon Pericles, Fi Wilkie, Voytek Kozlowski and Christian Fletcher as well as emerging talents such as Alice Linford Forte and Rubi Hatton, the book reflects the deep connection the Margaret River region has with those who create within its borders. A collector's item, Artists of the Margaret River Region is a beautiful visual record of those who have been inspired by the region.

Inspired by Margaret River Region Open Studios, the book is intended to showcase the work of the many artists who have participated in this unique public art movement. MRROS has grown to become the biggest art event of its kind in Australia since its launch three years ago. From Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in WA's south west, visitors are able to explore in an unprecedented way the art studios of over 100 established and emerging artists for up to 16 days every autumn (April 22 until May 7 in 2017), watching them create at the easel, drawing board or workshop. It's an innovative approach – and a hugely successful one at that - bringing art to the general public in a wholly new way in Australia. The photographic approach taken in the book reflects the 'behind the scenes' ethos of MRROS and the insightful profiles of each artist and, in part two, galleries, reveals fascinating details about what makes the creative process of the south west's most important artists so linked to the land they call home.

Struth! Aspiring young actor jailed for seducing woman.

Guess who's the mug in this shot?

IN his continuing search for the more weird and wondrous in this world, David Ellis asks do you know who is the person in this police mug shot taken at the Bergen County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey in November of 1938?

Here's a clue: he is 23 years of age at the time, an aspiring Hollywood actor, and has just been charged with the heinous crime under then New Jersey law "that on November 27 1938 under the promise of marriage, he did then and there seduce a single woman of then and there good repute."

However when it was discovered that the "single woman of then and there good repute" was in fact married, the charge was dropped and replaced with one of adultery (also an indictable offence in New Jersey in 1938)… but that too was dropped after the young actor had spent several days in jail.

And that young actor's name was Frank Sinatra, at the time engaged to Nancy Barbato who had been attacked in a nightclub by the woman with whom Sinatra was charged with being adulterous – that woman apparently furious that the man who had "promised her marriage" was in fact already engaged (even though she herself was married,) and going to the nightclub to confront Nancy.

Nancy, however, appeared little concerned about her fiancĂ©'s  fling, and went on to marry him the following year; they divorced in 1951 as a result of Sinatra's numerous affairs, he re-marrying three more times before dying in 1998 aged 82, while Nancy never remarried – and is still alive today aged 98.

[] NOT the publicity shot this rising young Hollywood star was hoping for back in 1938.
