Belgian tourist Celine Cremer, aged 31, has been missing in the rugged Tasmanian wilderness since mid-June 2023. Cremer, who had been travelling and working in Tasmania earlier that year, was last seen on 17 June 2023 around the small town of Waratah in north-west Tasmania. She intended to continue her travels by ferry to Victoria but never boarded the vessel, prompting concern from her family when she failed to make contact.
Authorities later located her white Honda CRV at the car park of a walking track to Philosopher Falls, a popular short bushwalk in dense rainforest. Her mobile phone last pinged in the area around 20 June, and despite extensive land, air and water searches by Tasmania Police, search and rescue teams and specialist units over several weeks, no sign of her was found at that time. Due to the extremely cold weather, with snow, rain and freezing conditions, police warned that survival would have been unlikely.
Recently, in a renewed search effort led by a private investigator and supported by Cremer’s friends — four of whom travelled from Belgium — a mobile phone confirmed to belong to her was discovered in the bush near her last known location. That find has lifted spirits among searchers and Cremer’s supporters, and the device will undergo forensic examination as efforts continue to uncover more clues.
