Dame Penelope Keith, the distinguished British actress whose commanding presence, impeccable comic timing and unmistakable voice made her one of television’s most enduring stars, has died aged 86.
Keith became a household name as the formidable but ultimately warm-hearted Margo Leadbetter in the BBC comedy The Good Life. She later cemented her reputation as the grande dame of British sitcoms playing aristocratic widow Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born.
Her career began in repertory theatre, and she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. She enjoyed considerable success on stage as well as television, winning an Olivier Award and two BAFTAs.
Although frequently associated with upper-class characters, Keith brought intelligence, vulnerability and humanity to roles that might otherwise have become caricatures. She was appointed a Dame in 2014 for services to the arts and charity, recognition of a career that extended well beyond performance.
Dame Penelope leaves a legacy as one of Britain’s most distinctive and best-loved comic actresses.
